Adam Nolan Trio -irlandzki free bop z Nowego Jorku

Urodzony w 1993 roku w Irlandii free jazzowy saksofonista altowy Adam Nolan, w ostatnim czasie dał się poznać jako jeden z najbardziej kreatywnych improwizatorów.
Swój oparty na kreatywnych improwizacjach oryginalny styl, muzyk zawdzięcza nowoczesnemu podejściu do koncepcji stylu starej szkoły jazzowej spod znaku Erica Dolphy i Ornette'a Colemana.
Nolanowi towarzyszy dwójka irlandzkich muzyków: kontrabasista Derek Whyte i perkusista Dominic Mullan.
Pierwszy z nich jest ważną postacią na dublińskiej scenie jazzowej, współtworzącą takie składy jak Mike Nielsen Quartet, Electric Freeplay, Dirty Jazz Band czy Fuzzy Logic Ensemble.
Z kolei perkusistę tria znać możemy z współpracy z trębaczem Linleyam Hamiltonem, saksofonistą Gayem McIntyre, czy Nigelem Mooneyem, Stellą Base i  Carole Nelson.
Na okładce płyty saksofonista wymienia muzyków, których dorobek stanowil inspirację do powstania albumu. Są to: Ornette Coleman, Kaoru Abe, Anthony Braxton, Kenny Garrett, Bobby Watson i Sam Rivers.
"Prim and Primal" to świetny free bopowy album: szczery, odważny, spontaniczny i porywający.
Album ukazał się 19 sierpnia.

Throughout his prolific career, altoist Adam Nolan has been dedicated to creating music that is freely improvised, conversational, and quite honest. He has an attractive tone of his own and, while sometimes hinting at Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman, his musical conception is very original. On Prim and Primal, Nolan engages in close interplay with bassist Derek Whyte and drummer Dominic Mullan, two masterful musicians who, like the altoist, are based in Ireland. The set begins with “Expand The Tempo” which, as on the other five performances, emphasizes a musical conversation between Nolan and Whyte while Mullan contributes spontaneous commentary. The high-quality free bop performance has a strong forward momentum and puts the spotlight on Nolan’s speechlike alto. “The Modern Jazz Trio” features each of the musicians making concise unaccompanied solo statements before joining together in ensembles that evolve from being lyrical to fiery.
“Latin Jazz?” is a relatively mellow piece that contrasts with the explorative “Ancient Mayan Jungle”. Among the other highpoints are the stirring interplay between alto and bass on “The Magic Carpet” (a little reminiscent of Eric Dolphy and Charles Mingus although distinctive in its own way) and one of the most intense performances, the often-explosive but quite coherent closer, “Kung Fu Master vs. The Ape”. Throughout the episodic program, Nolan is the first among equals with Whyte and Mullan reacting instantly to his ideas while adding their own musical personalities to the colorful music. Adam Nolan was born in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1993. While he originally played rock and funk drums, he switched to the alto-sax when he was 14. Nolan graduated from WIT with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance and Composition. He spent time working as a session musician for a variety of groups but eventually decided to concentrate on creating his own brand of free jazz, creating music that is completely improvised and distinctive. He released his first album ("Expanding The Consciousness") in 2018 and has since recorded at least 15 other projects. Prim and Primal is the first time that Adam Nolan, Derek Whyte and Dominic Mullan performed as a trio. Bassist Whyte is a major part of the Dublin jazz scene, working with such adventurous groups as the Mike Nielsen Quartet, Electric Freeplay, the Dirty Jazz Band and Fuzzy Logic Ensemble. Drummer Dominic Mullan has also been an important musical force during the past decade, recording with trumpeter Linley Hamilton, altoist Gay McIntyre, singers Nigel Mooney and Stella Base, and pianist-vocalist Carole Nelson among others. The three musicians in the Adam Nolan Trio may not have worked as a unit previously but they sound like they have been improvising together on a regular basis for years. Prim and Primal is a particularly memorable example of artists who are not shy to create spontaneous, exhilarating and very honest music.
