For the first time, all of the songs written by Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas, including five never before officially released, are featured together on the new project from The Niro with the exceptional collaboration of Gary Lucas.
This album spotlights a surprising chapter of Jeff Buckley’s creativity in tandem with acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Gary Lucas. Circa 1991-92, during an intense 10-month period, Jeff and Gary wrote 12 songs for Gary’s band Gods and Monsters, which at the time featured Jeff as lead singer. These songs all began with Gary composing solo guitar instrumentals, complete with all the riffs and harmonic structure, to which Jeff added a vocal melody and lyrics. After their packed debut concert at St. Ann’s Church, Brooklyn on March 13th 1992, despite a three minute standing ovation at the end, Jeff decided to leave the project and continue solo. From their 12 songs, Jeff will later select “Mojo Pin” and “Grace” to feature on his eponymous debut album. In 2002, the album “Songs to No One” was released featuring some of Jeff and Gary’s early work together.
28 years after Jeff and Gary began writing their anthemic songs together, for the first time, The Niro and Gary Lucas have recorded in the studio the entire original project, including five Buckley/ Lucas songs never before officially released. Thus, you have “The Complete Jeff Buckley & Gary Lucas Songbook”.
The Niro is the name of the ongoing musical project by the Rome-based artist, vocalist and songwriter Davide Combusti, protagonist of the Italian indie-rock scene since 2002. Davide Combusti is neither a clone nor a disciple of Jeff Buckley and it would be anyway reductive judging this project only by similarities or differences with Jeff’s voice.
Gary Lucas has recorded 30-plus solo and group albums and toured in over 40 countries, including China, Russia, Cuba, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Israel and all across Europe and the UK. Classic Rock Magazine hailed Lucas one of the “100 Greatest Living Guitarists”, and David Fricke in Rolling Stone called Gary “one of the best and most original guitarists in America…a modern guitar miracle”.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the release of Jeff Buckley’s iconic “Grace” album, commenting on this project Gary Lucas called it his personal gift to all the Jeff Buckley lovers around the world.
